Bishkek

Kyrgyzstan’s capital, Bishkek ^ [map] , is a pleasant city of around 1 million people. It is often described as the polite younger brother of the former Kazakh capital Almaty, just a couple of hours’ drive to the north, and it certainly retains a relaxed, small-town feel. Unlike many of Central Asia’s settlements, it’s not a great city of antiquity. It started life as a fort guarding the trade routes at the fringe of the Kokand Khanate before becoming the Russian garrison town of Pishpek in 1878. Renamed Frunze in 1926 by the Soviets after the leader of the Red Army who was born here, it was only after independence in 1991 that it took the name Bishkek.
